Let’s talk about the C word…

Yep that's right, we’re not only gonna out rightly say it but we’re gonna get down and dirty with it. No more pretending not saying it is going to make it go away, its here and it’s been heard. The dreaded C word… Carbon.

Maybe not the C word you were thinking of, but all the stigma still relates. Carbon and businesses go hand in hand when it comes to the destruction of our earth, and so we’ve made it a major part of our vocabulary here at A_C.

First up, what even is Carbon and what’s the big deal about it?

Well simply put Carbon is literally just an element, it makes up a lot natural resources as well as molecules in living things. But for our purpose Carbon refers to Carbon Dioxide (CO2) the most well known greenhouse gas.
As you probably know too much Carbon in the atmosphere means bad news for us and our planet, which is kinda the situation we’re all living in right now.

What's that got to do with us?

Burning fossil fuels, harvesting things from the earth and destroying things that absorb CO2 (plants and trees) helps unbalance our natural CO2 levels. A bag business, for example, may need land for crops, energy for machinery and petrol for transport… see a pattern?

A recent study by Dr Sailesh Rao for the Journal of Ecological Society found the animal agriculture industry to be responsible for at least 87% of greenhouse gas emissions! Do you know what else comes from the animal agriculture industry? Leather. It’d be easy to get into the nitty gritty of why leather is bad and completely unnatural but for now that 87% should be enough to get you saying the other C word.

A_C was made to provide the world with chic and stylish bags that didn’t exploit the earths and the things living on it. Not exploiting living things was easy; no leather. Not exploiting living people also easy; ethical work standards. Not exploiting the earth… a little bit harder.

That was until the genius behind Desserto® and cactus leather graced our world! Cactus leather is a great Carbon combater for multiple reasons:
  1. Desserto® saves 1,864.02% Greenhouse Gas Emissions compared to animal leather, and 77.69% compared to polyurethane (PU).
  2. If incinerated, Desserto® saves 1,416.66% Greenhouse Gas Emissions compared to animal leather, and 90.55% compared to polyurethane (PU).
  3. 14 acres of organic cactus plantations can absorb 8,100 tons of CO2 per year, while only generating 15.30 tons of CO2
  4. The cactus root system is left in the ground, not disturbing the soil which would otherwise release Carbon if pulled out.

And so, with access to new sustainable, natural (and fucking stylish!) alternatives, we’re left wondering;

Why is money still being poured into an industry that causes OVER ¾ of global Carbon emissions?
